One could almost smell the chai tee swirling in the tin carriers, and the mysterious hypnotic wails of the snake charmers' flute was almost discernable in the misty air of the TKSS BlackBox...
The theme for last week was India - and our SWiSS students had a great time dramatising out their comprehension passage after doing a tableux of their scenes... with all the props available to further drive their imagination and the possibilities of scene enactment to greater heights, the sky was the limit!
The students not only learnt about the poverty and slums that dotted India's landscape - they were also amazed and humbled by the stories they heard from their teachers about the humility, pride and dignity of those who were even less fortunate than they were, and how the indomitable will and determination to survive and live in spite of less than fortunate circumstances was something they could learn from.
Our SWiSS students were also always constantly anchored down to their text and passages, never losing focus that their drama play was a means and a platform for them to apply the understanding and empathy gained from their dramatisations as a way for them to comprehend and understand their text better.
Strategies such as tableux, drama role playing and hotseating have resulted in a deeper appreciation for character motivation, the peripheral thought processes of the characters involved and have made students more sensitive to the outcome of their comprehension passages and understanding of the questions that follow.
Student work has shown a marked improvement to their coherence and understanding of the passage, and it has been interesting to see how they have thought about the characters in a way that shows a more carefully-considered thought process that has evidence of a more intimate & thoughtful engagement with the passage:
